Lay of the Land by Howlitzer Lay of the Land by Howlitzer
My entry for the 2011-2012 :iconwerewolf-calendar: contest. (Part of this is community vote, so if you haven't, do it here: [link])

Due to my crazy work schedule over the summer, I didn't get started on this one until rather late. I'm very glad I did finish this on time @_@.

My idea sketches for this resulted from an image that popped into my head while I was driving...no background story, as that's usually how it happens... and a desire to do some experimentation with lighting.

Rather than go absolutely OCD on the fur detailing on these guys, I shifted priorities to the overall composition, since lighting and backgrounds are a major personal weak point. To be honest I'm very glad with the way this turned out.

Caption:
"As a rite of passage for werewolf young, it is required that they learn the lay of their land. The ins and outs, the locations, and how to locate the secret places by scent alone. Many werewolf packs leave no visible marking upon their land, as visual symbolism has less meaning than scent.

Often, the way that a good place is distinguished from a bad place will be the history of its scent; this is something that all pack young must learn."

A thanks to :iconvagrantwulf: for the interpretation and the title, he is much better with story-telling in text than I am, as I hadn't fully conceptualized the story in this scene when I did this piece.

heh...really?

Not surprised if I fell off the radar. I haven't been posting much art lately. *Very* busy.

Thanks though! :D

Nice work, Howlie! Love the concept and the posture of both subjects. The far background could stand to be a little desaturated to give a more inclusive sense of depth if you felt like it. The shadow cast over the foreground character is very nice.

Thank you!

And yeah, outdoor scenery has not been a strongpoint of mine in the past...so I will hopefully be doing more pieces with interesting backdrops to get the hang of this.

Great expression on the forward figure's face - I hate it when artists just plop a wolf head on and don't bother to give it a readable, human expression.

Thank you!

Good to know other people notice, I do try to add a bit of human to the faces.

Though I should have asked this when you were in the lineart stages, are you open for concrit? There's honestly not a ton that I see wrong here, but the thing that bugs me every time I look at this is the junction of the hands/arms. I think the lower/climb wolf's arm juts out too sharply. That elbow is so pointy - I just, unfortunately, don't know what I would even do with a redline or anything else. I'd have to make/photograph the pose myself. It seems a little off, that's all, but I'm not sure how you would approach it to make it more lifelike.

Watching you in the Livestream for as briefly as I did was absolutely amazing! Your use of texture and atmospheric effects really spices up this whole piece and gives it context. Stones, trees, fog, etc. Everything looks wonderful. I can't wait to see what you do with this!

Thank you!..and I'm definitely open to constructive criticism, don't worry there. :D

Since this is a contest entry that already got submitted (it was due by today) I'm not sure if I can squeeze in after-the-minute minor edits.

Oh, you've improved a lot from last year's entry! I love the lighting, it creates such an adventurous atmosphere. Great job.

Thank you :D

Yeah, last year's entry was a smidge disappointing for me with the background details. I spent far too much time on just the fur detailing and ultimately didn't get well into the background I had envisioned. It became apparent a priority shift was in order.
